About me
Matt Gray, Director, Spring Street Opera
Matt Gray is an award-winning Brooklyn-based director, producer, and writer originally from Marysville, Ohio. He studied at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts achieving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Directing and spent several years in New York working in indie and film. He began at American Opera Projects in 2003 never having seen an opera, but quickly relied on his background in film and theatre to develop AOP projects from the point of view of an audience member unfamiliar with opera, but well-versed in popular entertainment and modern storytelling. Some of the operas Gray has directed include, As One (New York City Opera, Columbus Opera, Chautauqua Opera, International Opera Projects) and Darkling. He’s hosted workshops at the American Opera Theater, that is, Numinous City (Rubin Museum of Art), AbSynth and Semmelweis (New York Academy of Medicine). He has continued to work as a writer and director for numerous concerts, cabarets, and plays around NYC. He was the co-writer and co-director of the 12-part serialized play Penny Dreadful which ran at the Brick Theater in Brooklyn for two years and was also one of five directors on the award-winning indie horror anthology film The Moose Head Over the Mantel, which will be released on Blu-Ray and streaming in January 2019. In July 2019 Gray became the General Director of The American Opera Project (AOP), an organization specializing in the creation of contemporary opera (including As One, which it commissioned and premiered in 2014), having been with the company for fifteen years. Matt Gray director exclusive world première of Spring Street and the full performance can be watched here on Saturday 24th July 2021. Inspired by life on Spring Street, Manhattan – setting the poetry of Steve Dalachinsky and Yuko Otomo to music by Pete Wyer – wildly eclectic like the street itself.
