About me
Born and raised in the clay villages of Cornwall, I first sat on a stool at a piano aged 7 and started classical training, passing the Trinity College, London exams at Grade 5 with a Distinction. Later in life I achieved a Diploma of Music from the Open University. At 12 or 13 I started teaching myself to play modern rock/pop piano and by age of 14 became a working musician with a band playing the pubs and clubs. After several years and bands the main live project became a duo called the 'James Brothers' playing covers (although we have written a couple of country songs which we also love to play). We continue to enjoy the live experience. Having performed, across Britain, Europe and Ireland for 40 years I'm now concentrating on creating and releasing piano based music to chill, soothe and relax. The inspiration for the new music emanates from artists such as Max Richter, Philip Glass, Ólafur Arnalds and Ludovico Einaudi. I've taken the sound and created music incorporating my own feeling and expression. I'm also a member of MusicTeachers.co.uk and loving working with students of all ages who want to learn to play the piano.
Dolore Autunnale - by James Hawken
Cello lead, melancholic string arrangement to capture the mood of mourning.
Cartesean Doubt - by James Hawken
Ambling around the fields picking up horse s**t gets me into a meditative state where I ponder. I think! Therefore, I am! According to René anyway. Mmm…I wonder!I made a Lo-fi beat, did a live piano recording to kit , added vocals. Reflective meditation on duality and self awareness.
Touch - James Hawken
When a relationship feels cold and you feel isolated sometimes all you need is to touch. Not necessarily physically, but emotionally!
Leaving It All Behind - James Hawken
Do you ever feel like you've had enough? You need to make changes in your life? I felt like this and as usual, sat at the piano. I used the instrument to 'reset' my frame of mind, as a bridge from one life experience to another. The result is an expressive, dynamic piece full of changes of pace and touch. The overall effect instilling an air of calm and closing of a chapter. It's mood is also positive and conveys a feeling of optimism for the future.
The Wings of a Butterfly - James Hawken
Out of the blue an ol' mucker Toby Banks (Mumbo) posted something very dear to me on social media. In our conversation Tobe mentioned that he performs a song of mine that I had forgotten I wrote called 'The Wings of a Butterfly'. Tobe had a recording of him singing it from 30 years ago. He sang it beautifully. I 'grabbed' his vocals and did this!
Where Fools Inhabit - James Hawken
Don't ask me! There I was in a slow, bluesy, old beat up piano kind of mood when something overtook the process. Imagine Todd Rundgren a la 'Bat Out of Hell' meets Brian May's 'Red Special' and you'll get the idea. 'At the end of the day Brian, it's a game of two halves (J.G.)'.
