Artist Focus: Khole Baldeo

We are very excited to introduce Khole Baldeo, one of the next great artists to come out of the Caribbean, and more specifically, the Island of Grenada. She is an extremely talented singer, performer and songwriter who has created a real name for herself on her island, and she’s now set her eyes on international success. Having seen her perform in person I can say she has an incredible voice and can attract the attention of an audience with ease. Her electric, unforgiving nature during performance is a brilliant sight and you can only admire the clear love and dedication she has for her craft.  Her following has been eagerly awaiting her new journey in music, as she like many artists prepared to elevate her career to the next level. Having opened shows for notable artists such Buju Banton and Sizzla Kalonji, she took time to find her own new unique sound. Having previously been more of a Soul singer, she has found her calling in ‘Island Pop’. The genre is a clash of Dancehall and Pop, often very bouncy and easy to listen to, describing love, life, sex and relationships.  Her debut single ‘Island Girl’, produced by the excellent ‘Exit Daze’ currently residing in Grenada, is a joyful, exciting start to her new voyage. There is an incredible energy about the track, Khole has clearly entertained her past soulful style with her light, loving lyrics while also exploring the fiercer, sensual side of her character in the chorus. The happy-sad nature of the songs story adds a lot of emotion, as she speaks of two people dancing around one another, but feeling reluctant to ‘make a move’ as they are afraid of a bad reaction.   The mix consists of upbeat guitar chords, and a modern pop style beat, with some layering of piano keys, which really encapsulates an Island vibe. Khole sets the tone for the song “Would you run away if I told you I love you, would it make you stay, let’s take a chance”. The light start to the song progresses to a knocking chorus. She tells her audience of this relationship with great detail, creating spicy imagery as she leaves the specifics up to interpretation.  An electric song needs an electric music video and that is certainly the case here. The smooth moves of Khole and her dancers make you feel as if you are this elusive character who she is in love with. There is a lovely mix in the choreography between the joyful, coordinated but careless dancing, and the more seductive side of Khole towards her subject as you get a glimpse of what may be in store.  ‘Island Girl’ is an exciting, jubilant and professional release. We love the vibe that Khole Baldeo has created here, a fantastic start to her new identity. We shall continue to keep you updated on her new releases as there is much more to come!  How can Jeeni support artists like Khole Baldeo? Interview with Hip Hop Collective Word of Mouth

Word of mouth is a hip hop collective from Portsmouth, EJ Salako got the chance to interview members Kizz, Blessed and Sinsink at this year's Victorious Festival. The group create hip hop, UK rap and freestyle music. Taking influences from many artists including Eminem and Mic Righteous. They discuss their competitive side with each other and how it motivates them to keep creating better music. And their creative process of linking up in their home studios to write and produce new tracks. “We’re not trying to be like anyone else, we just trying to like ourselves” – Blessed. EJ asked the three to share each of their favourite tracks: Kizz’s favourite solo is a track called “Ride On My Ones”,  and his favourite group track is “Curb Stomp”. Blessed favourite solo is "Vandross" which was featured on BBC Radio Introducing. And his favourite group track has to be an unreleased one that hasn’t got a name yet. The track samples Dmx shortly after he passed away, with a respect to him because he was a huge influence on them as rappers. It will be released on their upcoming album, Sinsink’s favourite solo is a song called “Hey Babe” because it always gets people moving on the dance floor. His favourite group track is another unreleased one with Tommy Brown titled “Saucy”. Closing the Interview Kizz and Blessed shared their future goals with us, “As much as I’d love to be at the top of the scene but not only that in 5 years I want to be exactly here with these exact same boys, doing exactly what we do, that is 100% it, we are a family” Kizz Blessed continued “We’re lucky enough to be where we are already and just keep going man. We’re pushing the boundaries each time we do an event, each time we host our own event or we put a track out. It’s really about putting Portsmouth on the map and being recognised. When one of us succeeds we all succeed.” Check out the full video Interview here: Word of Mouth Inside Story Interview at Victorious Festival

Single Review: Gohan by DarkStarGraver

DarkStar’s newest single, ‘Gohan’ fully showcases his capabilities of structuring melodic hip-hop bangers, complete with ear-worm hooks, rumbling sub kicks and impeccable vocal production.   Tracks like these are dangerous because you hear it once and you’ll be hearing it all day long. In DSG's newest teaser single, a delicate flamenco guitar provides the moody, minor chord progression, enforced by the sub bass kick drums. Production value like this is that what you’d expect from an act with DefJam or TDE, not a self-releasing rapper. DSG uses a vocal effect here on 'Gohan' that has proved to be a massive crowd-pleaser before, on ‘CodeRED’ from last year’s ‘Burning Bridges’ EP. The rich harmonies and multitracking heard in the choruses on ‘Gohan’ is something that his voice takes to particularly well. DarkStar certainly isn’t scared of his own vocal capabilities; a confidence that really makes a difference on the mic.  Last week, DSG disclosed some of his most prominent influences to Jeeni for our Artist Focus which included names like Tyler, The Creator, Skepta and OutKast. However, DarkStar’s sound doesn’t really seem to line up with any of these artists, at least not on a surface level. Perhaps it's the mindsets and lyrical tendencies of these artists that resonates with DSG because in actuality, DarkStarGraver is really paving his own path in the world of hip-hop, a path that truly, justly deserves so much more attention, appreciation and worldwide respect.   And to think that this is DarkStar’s genesis, his early work, and he’s operating at this level of skill and artistic understanding, it is so exciting to think what’s ahead for this artist’s career.  'Gohan' was released with a vibrant and psychedelic music video that emphasises the bouncy and contagious tone this single sets. As the track ends, DSG fades in the artwork for his new album, "Over The Bridge & Far Away", set to be released this Christmas Eve. With singles like these teasing the contents of this upcoming project, you can't help but get excited for the release of DSG's debut album.
