Artist Focus: Amba Tremain, The South Coast Soultress

Despite Amba Tremain’s proclivity towards the 'good ol’ days' of soul, motown and rhythm & blues, the Portsmouth singer’s attitude and approach to honoring the classics is refreshing, open and varied. The South coast soulstress -as aptly dubbed in her bio- has firmly re-opened a nostalgic and warm door to the golden-era of soul via spirited covers and fiery original tracks.

As lecturer and Head of Vocals, for Brighton’s WaterBear College, it should be no surprise that Amba’s vocal capabilities rival that of even the original godfathers and mothers of soul. Her pitch perfect voice has lead to her being the star talent on several collaborations, very much out of her typical creative choice.

Earlier this year, British electronic duo, Hollaphonic sampled a work of Amba’s for their summer house banger, ‘Shadows In The Sun’ which found its way on countless playlists. Up-and-coming Deltiimo also felt inspired by Amba’s talent, resulting in the floor-filling ‘Boy If You Want My Love’ back in 2018.

Her sheer vocal talent also got her an invitation on BBC1’s hit Saturday night show, ‘I Can See Your Voice’. Contestants had to guess from a selection of would-be performers who can and can’t sing. Amba was obviously (perhaps not at first to the contestants) the show’s jaw-dropping talent for the evening and sung her heart out for the primetime gameshow.

The pureness and clarity of Amba Tremain’s voice certainly makes her the perfect subject for electronic collaborations, however, she shines brightest on her own compositions. Most recently; ‘Baby You’re Gold’ which came out last Friday, is a laid-back, blissful tune with glossy and glamorous performances all around, (Check out Jeeni’s full review of the track here).

Far from a one-trick pony, Amba has embraced all sorts of traditional genres and styles such as funk, country, pop and rock. Unlike many of her other works, ‘More Than My Mistakes’ is an all-too relatable RnB piano ballad. Stripped back to the basics of vocals, piano and selective strings, this single from last year contains a raw and unfeigned passion that most vocalists could only dream to convey.

Sofar Sounds described Amba’s essence well, ‘Amba’s beautiful melodies and engaging energy make for a truly captivating experience. Amba breathes life and honesty into her soulful performances through her very honest lyrics and vocals’.

If her 2021 singles are anything to go by, Amba Tremain has built up a formidable momentum of releases which hopefully will only continue to grow.

A Showcase for a New Chapter - Biden's Inauguration

What a difference four years make! This Wednesday 20 January 2021 will see Joe Biden inaugurated as the 47th President of America and he's planning a showcase for a new chapter. To begin the process of uniting his divided country, The Presedential Inaugural Committee has assured, the pared down event for health and safety reasons, will feature 'music, poetry, dance and pay homage to America's heroes on the frontline of the pandemic'. President-Elect Joe Biden and Lady Gaga - Photo: Variety When the outgoing President, Donald Trump stepped up to take the oath in 2017, he had struggled to get artists and crowds to help him celebrate. Having been turned down by Elton John, Celine Dion, Kiss and others, he eventually secured the services of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, rock band 3 Doors Down and country singer Toby Keith. It is alleged he also had the further embarrassment of having to have a crowd edited into the TV footage, as so few had shown up to witness the ceremony. Joe Biden in contrast, has had his pick of the crop and the list of artists wanting to be a part of the showcase action reads like a Grammy Award ceremony. Lady Gaga will be singing 'The Star Spangled Banner' for the swearing-in ceremony, due to commence at 11:30am. The inauguration line-up of stars reported so far, includes Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, The Foo Fighters, Demi Lovato and Jon Bon Jovi, who also performed at Obama's inauguration in 2009. Justin Timberlake is confirmed, writing on twitter he will be performing a track he wrote with Ant Clemons during the lockdown. Timberlake recorded his final vocals for 'Better Days' on the night of the election. The track reflects the last year and the frustration, grief, anger and powerlessness everyone has felt, whilst encouraging everyone to stay hopeful. The spoken-word will play a large part in the proceedings too. The new President's speech to the nation will be an obvious focal point, alongside the words from his Vice-President, Kamala Harris. The firefighter Andrea Hall will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Amanda Gorman, the first National Youth Poet Laureate will recite a poem. Father Leo O'Donovan and Reverend Dr Silvester Beaman, longtime friends of the Biden's, will deliver invocation and benediction, respectively. Reading and Leeds Festival is On!

Huzzah - Reading and Leeds Festival is on! Festival organisers confirmed today, the event will go ahead as planned, after the Prime Minister set out his plans for the the easing of the Lockdown. The expectation is for England to be free from all restrictions by the end of June. Posting on social media Reading and Leeds organisers shared footage from classic performances at previous festivals, as well as telling fans, “Reading and Leeds 2021. Following the government’s recent announcement, we can’t wait to get back to the fields this summer. The newly introduced West Main Stage will take in headline performances from the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, Disclosure and Queens Of The Stone Age. It comes after the government confirmed that they will “aim to remove all legal limits on social contact” by June 21. Before that, outdoor hospitality, such as pubs and outdoor dining, could reopen on April 12, with indoor hospitality following on May 17. The latter date is also the first point where live events could return, however, limited capacities and social distancing may still be required. After June 21, all other restrictions should be removed – however, the roadmap is contingent on vaccinations going to plan, COVID-19 variants not causing new problems, and the infection rate lowering. Richard Murray - 'Fire Sale' Album Review

With lush, full arrangements, creative use of instrumentation and authoritative vocal performances, Richard Murray’s newest album, ‘Fire Sale’ might just be his most impactful to date since his debut in 2007. Richard Murray is a Northern Irish singer and songwriter who specialises in expanding the pre-conceived ideas people have about country music. Richard pushes the country and western envelope by introducing alternative instruments, song writing approaches and mindsets. This record showcases all of these abilities to a tee and has really coloured-in Jeeni’s country channel. A favourite of mine on this record is the fourth track, ‘Devils 2’. This a more contemplative and gentler moment in the album where Richard is putting his charismatic and gravelly voice to good use as he communicates an intense emotional yearning. Richard uses bongos as a part of the minimal, yet compelling percussion section along with a steady kick drum. The guitar parts here twinkle and shimmer alongside Richard’s crooning vocals as the two sections enhance each other. ‘Hard Love’, while still acoustic, really harnesses a moody rock ballad tone with a forceful beat, and almost mumbling vocals from Richard. An impressive direction to take; ‘Hard Love’ does a great job in creating a deeper and richer overall flavour to ‘Fire Sale’. Towards the end of the album, Richard slightly showcases his Celtic heritage with ‘Sea Glass’. A fiddle doubles a jaunty guitar part in between the verses which creates a warm image of a rowdy and patriotic gathering. This track provides a last push in energy for this perfect campfire album, as its last moments wind the project down in an introspective and reflective fashion. The last track on ‘Fire Sale’, 'You Get Wise' acts as a sort of summary and reflection on the stellar tracks that have come before it. A Jeeni and Bandcamp exclusive, the closing track holds some of Richard’s most thoughtful and tender songwriting and performances, making it a perfect choice to sum up this exciting and heart-warming album. ‘Fire Sale’ is a sentimentally tender project. At times, Richard is longing for home, where other times, he’s just walked through the door and celebrations have begun. The album has a real range in emotions, moods and sentiments and is a must listen for all country fans.
